Louis Gontier started his career over 40 years ago as an engineering cadet at sea with Safmarine. Whilst at Safmarine, he progressed through the ranks - sailing on both steam and motor ships - and finally obtained his first Class Combined Steam and Motor Certificate of Competency. He then sailed as Chief engineer before coming ashore and joining Germanischer Lloyd as a Marine Surveyor.
Louis spent five years as a Marine Surveyor handling all types of surveys, including: grounding damage; collision damage; engine room machinery damage; and normal Class and Statutory Surveys.
A position was offered to him in a Shipyard as Director and Shareholder, where he was tasked to grow the business and ensure operational efficiency and professionalism. He spent 10 years' as Technical Director in the Shipyard. During his time at this shipyard he was instrumental in developing Cofferdam-type Repairs to all parts of vessels including Shell plate, Rudders and Propeller shaft Seals. This shipyard was then merged with the largest shipyard in South Africa. Louis then moved on to later become part of a consortium that purchased a defunct shipyard and managed to positively turn this yard around. Here he acted as Managing Director, and was responsible for all technical matters.
This yard built 16 large Voith Schneider tugs. Louis was also instrumental in starting ship repair at the yard where they carried out several major jobs, including the lengthening of a Mega Yacht, carrying out major fire damage repairs, flooding of engine room repairs and major refit work on the Navy Frigates.
